Making Tibetan Bowls Vibrate
January 30th, 2010
If you grasp Tibetan Singing Bowls in your hand, it remains free to vibrate. Then, you can softly rub a mallet across the edge of it. This is what causes the singing noise, often used for Tibetan meditation. You can also softly hit the wall of the bowl. This makes a bell-like sound. Either style you use crystal singing bowls, it is the vibrations that make the sound, similar to if you glide your finger around the edge of a goblet. The pitch of the noise can be changed depending on the bowl depth. Bowls can be as wide as 4 to eleven inches. You can also increase the mallet velocity to alter the sound.
